Oil prices pare gains on U.S. inflation concerns
  + stars: | 2024-04-29 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Oil prices fell in early Asian trading on Monday, reversing gains from Friday as U.S. inflation data further dimmed the prospects of interest rate cuts anytime soon and boosted the dollar, which hurts oil demand. "The sticky U.S. inflation sparks concerns for 'higher-for-longer' interest rates", leading to a stronger U.S. dollar and putting pressure on commodity prices, independent market analyst Tina Teng said. Lower inflation would have increased the likelihood of interest rate cuts, which would stimulate economic growth and oil demand. But oil prices could swing higher again if U.S. inventory data and China's PMI index show improvements this week, Teng said. Brent had settled up 49 cents and WTI up 28 cents on Friday on concerns about disruptions to supply from events in the Middle East.

The video is altered from a 2020 YouTube livestream and Reuters found no evidence that The Sun published it. Not only does the livestream pre-date the current conflict in Ukraine, but nowhere in the livestream does the model speak of any intention to run for office. A side-by-side comparison between the livestream (L) (03:38) and the altered clip (00:13) is a match except for the lip movements. The social media channels for the model do not reference any such interview with the Sun or an intention to run for president. Denmark this month began training eight Ukrainian pilots in flying the jets, the Danish armed forces said. Officials from a coalition of 11 nations have said F-16 training will also take place in Romania. A Ukranian air force spokesman has said he did not expect Ukraine to be able to operate F-16 jets this coming winter. Designed in the 1970s and produced in the 1980s by General Dynamics, now a part of Lockheed Martin (LMT.N), the F-16 jets that Ukraine will receive are around 40-years-old. Russia warned that supplying jets to Ukraine would escalate the war.

The Swedish jets were specifically built to take on Russia's advanced fighter jets. "Today we discussed in detail the future steps regarding the possibility of opening the subject of receiving Swedish Gripens," Zelenskyy said in the joint press conference, per Reuters. Sweden previously said it would not send these jets to assist the war effort. This week, the United States finally approved plans to deliver F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, which the country's officials have asked for since the air battle between Russia has reached a stalemate. For one, the Gripen's electronic-warfare capabilities are reportedly able to outmaneuver Russia's Sukhoi jets, which have even eluded F-16s.

Prigozhin, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has publicly threatened to withdraw his mercenaries from the area around Bakhmut, where they are at the vanguard of the Russian offensive, unless they receive much-needed ammunition. Russia's efforts to take the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut seem to be losing momentum, the UK MOD said. Bakhmut has huge symbolic importance to Russia, and failing to take it would be a big blow. The city is one of the few places Russia has made recent progress, as its latest offensive fails to grow. The UK MOD said that momentum may be slipping "partially because some Russian MoD units have been reallocated to other sectors." The UK MOD said in December that capturing Bakhmut would have "limited operational value" for Russia.
